This 2-day course provides first responder law enforcement officers and vetted personnel with standardized tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for responding to an active shooter incident.

Instruction is delivered through a combination of classroom presentations, instructor-led practical exercises, and scenario-based training. The curriculum is modeled after the federally mandated ALERRT program, ensuring nationally recognized standards are met.

This 8-hour Firearms/Close Quarters Battle (CQB) course provides students with hands-on training designed to develop the firearms knowledge and tactical skills necessary to survive and prevail in realistic lethal force encounters. Through instructor-led practical exercises, often utilizing simulated firearms, participants will enhance critical psychomotor and gross motor skills that naturally diminish over time without consistent training. By the conclusion of the course, students will have increased confidence and proficiency in CQB tactics while also receiving updated legislative instruction, including AB 392, SB 230, and California Penal Code § 835a, ensuring that all training remains tactically relevant, legally current, and POST-compliant.

This 40-hour/5-day course modeled after the California Association of Tactical Officers (CATO) curriculum, is a condensed version of the original 80-hour program. The rationale for a 40-hour format is based on the operational experience many CATO students already possess with pistol, carbine, and shotgun platforms, as most are assigned to SWAT or other tactical units. CWPS has adopted this demand-driven approach to better serve agencies and officers seeking efficient, high-quality instruction.

In addition to law enforcement applications, CWPS staff has also delivered this course to students pursuing their Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) firearms instructor license. To meet BSIS requirements, graduates can be issued a certificate with a secondary title of “Firearms Instructor.” This flexibility allows the course to meet both POST and BSIS instructional standards.

The primary purpose of this course is to provide newly assigned law enforcement firearms instructors with the fundamental instructional skills needed to effectively and safely train other personnel. Course content covers pistol, carbine, and shotgun instruction, and students must pass all three qualification standards on the first day of class.  The curriculum also incorporates updated legislative material, including California Penal Code § 835a, ensuring compliance with current state use-of-force laws.

This 2-day course, with the secondary title “Advanced Carbine Operator – MACTAC,” is designed for sworn law enforcement personnel authorized to carry and deploy carbine rifles in the performance of their duties and is not intended as a basic rifle course. Students will train in the principles of MACTAC (Multi Assault Counter Terrorism Action Capabilities), including movement through barriers and close-quarters engagements conducted alongside other officers. Enrollment requires prior proficiency with the carbine and successful completion of a POST 16-hour Firearms/Tactical Rifle Course, a basic SWAT course, or an equivalent program. The curriculum also incorporates updated legislative mandates under AB 392, SB 230, and California Penal Code § 835a, ensuring instruction is both tactically relevant and legally compliant.

This 40-hour/5-day course provides training to law enforcement personnel who provide training/instruction to precision long rifle/sniper/designated rifle marksman element assigned to a SWAT team, tactical unit, or patrol.  This course is especially valuable for those responsible for qualifying or certifying personnel on scoped carbines or Low Power Variable Optics (LPVOs).

Students will learn classroom presentation skills, course of fire design, range instruction techniques, coaching the shooter, and safety protocols. Students will be able to identify, define, and work with rifle operators having difficulties shooting the long-rifle. This course provides updated legislative content and mandates of AB 392, SB 230, and Penal Code 835a.
